About Species Champions
There are active Species Champions projects in Westminster, Senedd Cymru and the Scottish Parliament that partner elected representatives with leading conservation organisations to bring political support to the protection and promotion of threatened wildlife.
Rethink Nature manages the Species Champions project in Westminster, with additional support from the Angling Trust, the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. 52 MPs representing English constituencies are currently signed up to the initiative.
Politicians are encouraged to raise awareness of the species they are championing and the causes of their decline, in their Parliament and in their constituencies or regions, and to support the development of public policy and legislation that will help their species flourish.
There are similar Species Champions initiatives working with elected representatives in each of the devolved nations, led in each case by the country’s Environment Link body (Wales Environment Link, Scottish Environment Link).
